Specializing in Bunka Punch Embroidery

So, What is Bunka?

Bunka Punch Embroidery is a method of working a special knitted Rayon yarn into a Fabric backing, whilst following a design printed on the fabric. The completed embroidery picture can then be framed, preferably under glass.

'Bunka' is a Japanese word meaning 'Culture'. Bunka Punch Embroidery was developed about sixty years ago, from the European form of punch embroidery.

The major differences are that, unlike 'Russian' punch embroidery stitching is worked on the finished side of the picture, so that you can see the design developing before your eyes. Also, a special four ply knitted rayon yarn is used, in its unravelled condition, giving the piece a unique 'pearly' lustre.

The fabric is stretched drum tight on a wooden workframe.

The punch needle is used to apply the unravelled yarn to the fabric by 'punching' a small loop through the fabric at each stitch point.

The backing fabric comes printed with the design of your choice, complete with arrows, shading lines and colour code numbering. Your finished picture will be given depth and dimension by the various lengths and directions of the stitches, similar to brush strokes in an oil painting.
